Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship

Welcome to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.  I am pleased you are considering specialized training in child and adolescent psychiatry. Our program is committed to training individuals who are dedicated, self-motivated and excited to provide care to children, adolescents and their families.  

We believe that a comprehensive understanding of children and adolescents is essential to provide ethical and compassionate psychiatric treatment.  By beginning with a thorough foundation in the neurodevelopmental and biological principles of child development, coupled with an understanding of the psychological, cultural and environmental circumstances in which each individual lives, we strive to provide care that is evidence-based and informed for each individual that we serve.  

Fellows in our program provide service in a variety of locations to allow for a broad-based experience in working with children and adolescents.  First-year fellows rotate through inpatient psychiatry and pediatric consultation services. The second year allows for expanded experiences in pediatric consultation services, school consultation, forensic psychiatry, neurology and community mental health rotations in Pima County and on the Tohono O’odham American-Indian Reservation. We have a special focus on cultural psychiatry with opportunities to participate in community based outreach. A structured outpatient experience is inclusive of both years at the Whole Child Clinic located at the Banner-University of Arizona Medical Center, South Campus which includes both general and specialized clinics.

In addition to learning CBT, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and family therapy, fellows receive exposure to Internal Family Systems (IFS), Applied Behavioral Analysis, and Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA).

Fellows have a unique opportunity to participate in our Integrative Psychiatry Elective Track for one or two years. The elective consists of 2-hours weekly experiential didactics (Experential Syllabus 2018-2019) and an on-line curriculum (80-100 hours Online Syllabus 2018-2019) provided by the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine.  Through participating in a Mind-Body Skills Group program, fellows learn to enhance their skillset for application to their own self-care and wellbeing, while gaining evidence-based tools to share with patients. They also learn how to answer patient questions about integrative approaches, prescribe supplements and life-style interventions when appropriate (e.g. nutrition, physical activity, mind-body approaches). Fellows will be exposed to the current evidence for many modalities such as acupuncture, biofeedback, and herbal medicine. The program has been exceedingly well received by the fellows, and we believe places our graduating fellows at the cutting edge of a national movement toward a more holistic approach to psychiatric disorders.
